Scalp micropigmentation all you need to know 2022

Feb 21

A staggering 7.4 million men in the UK are losing their hair at any one time, according to the charity Men’s Health Forum.

But that’s not all, because hair loss is thought to affect around eight million women here, too, with issues ranging from hereditary hair loss and scalp scarring to other forms of alopecia.

And with the major emotional impact losing our hair can have, finding a way to stop it, or to disguise its effects, has become the holy grail.

Scalp Micropigmentation is one of the options. And it’s available right here in Leicestishire.

Here, the experts at Luxe SMP explain everything you need to know...

What is Micropigmentation and how does it work?

Tiny flecks of ink are applied to the top layer of skin on the scalp.

The effect can be that they look like super tiny, shaved-hair follicles, or they can look like the base of hair follicles under thinning hair.

It means the expert Scalp Micropigmentation artist Luke Jewitt can make thin hair look dense again or give a bald guy back what looks like a full head of hair, but shaved.

The results are almost instant and can last years before a top-up is needed.

Is it a tattoo?

Technically the answer is yes but the intention of this is very different. Tattoos are meant to be seen where scalp micropigmentation is intended to be virtually undetectable.

What can Scalp Micropigmentation be used to treat?

It’s used most commonly for men with severe hair loss. But it’s just as effective in making thinning hair appear thicker, so it’s a great option for men and women experiencing different forms of alopecia.

It’s also used to camouflage scars on the scalp, both small scars from minor injuries as well as larger medical scars.

How long does the treatment take?

Scalp Micropigmentation is carried out over three sessions.

Each session can be repeated after seven to 14 days, so a full treatment can be completed quickly for an immediate result.

Does it last long?

It depends very much on skin type and how it’s cared for, but Scalp Micropigmentation can last up to three or four years.

It will drop in shade slightly over time, but top-up treatment is really simple and a single session is usually all that’s needed.

How much does it cost?

Cost varies depending on the size of the area that needs to be filled, so an initial consultation is a must. The consultation is free, so it’s worth a chat at least to find out the lay of the land.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation safe?

The pigments used at Luxe SMP leicester are vegan, so the inks are very safe. There are also typically fewer metals in the pigments compared with regular tattoo inks.

The practitioners also apply ink just below the top layer of skin, so they don’t penetrate the natural barrier and protective layer of the skin.

The Luxe SMP technicians are also trained in health and safety as well as infection control.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

Most clients say the treatment is very bearable.

There is some sensation as the needle applies the pigment to the skin, but as the needle is just touching the top layer and not piercing, the sensation is minimal and less intense than getting a tattoo.

On a scale of one to five – with five being worst – 95% of clients report the pain at level two.
